Brookside Students Share Drawing, Musical Talents:
The second and third grade students at Brookside School will showcase their artistic abilities at the school’s “Arts Night” on Thursday, January 31, starting at 7 p.m. Brookside families and the entire Ossining community are invited to attend. “This evening is a special celebration of Brookside’s second and third graders’ artistic and musical growth and development during this year,” says Brookside music teacher Giocille Shaw, who, with Brookside’s art teacher Rise Daniels, organized the program. Artworks and art demonstrations will be featured in the lobby starting at 7 p.m. Under Ms. Daniels’s supervision, students will show off the drawing techniques they’ve learned in art class. At 7:30 p.m., the second grade chorus, led by Ms. Shaw, will perform in the cafeteria.

 The Family Reading Connection
The Family Reading Connection is one of the ways that Brookside School is addressing the achievement gap. Students who need additional reading support are invited, along with their parents, to attend a series of four evening workshops throughout the school year. Each of the workshops focuses on a different aspect of literacy, providing parents with tools and strategies for helping their children at home. The workshops are conducted in English and Spanish. At the Family Reading Connection workshop on January 10, Brookside teachers, Mrs. Sue Cary and Mrs. Roberta Brown led a workshop on reading comprehension. They taught parents strategies for helping their children tackle tricky words. photos
